FROM AN ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEW with Brice Marden, 1972 Oct. 3, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution BRICE MARDEN: I was in New York and I was really anxious to meet people and stuff like that. But it was still very difficult. I would go to openings; there was always Tuesday night openings, and I'd go to all these openings and I'd be the only person who would look at anything. Everybody else knew everybody, and I didn't know anybody. But then you start meeting people and I met a lot of people through Steve Poleskie and we were both painting along. That whole building was full of artists; it was 76 Jefferson Street, lots of really good people.

WelcomeSTEPHEN (STEVE) POLESKIE IS AN ARTIST AND WRITER. His artwork is in the collections of numerous museums including the Metropolitan Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; The National Collection, Washington, D. C., and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Tate Gallery in London.
Over a career of fifty years Poleskie’s artwork has been widely exhibited. Among the cities he has had his work shown, or done performances, are: New York, Boston, Cambridge, Providence, Washington D. Among these are American Writing, BookPress, Essays & Fictions, Leonardo, Lightworks, Many Mountains Moving, OE, Pangolin Papers, Satire, Shiny, Skylark, SN Review, Straight, Sulphur River Literary Review, Q, and Wordwrights in the USA, D'Ars, and Spazio Humano in Italy, Himmelschrieber in Germany, In Other Words: Merida, in Mexico, and Imago in Australia. He has a short story in the anthologies, Being Human: Call of the Wild, and The Book of Love, from W. W. Norton, and has also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. A handmade book of his poetry, Sky, was printed by Loughborough College of Art in England. His novel, The Balloonist, The Story of T. S. C. Lowe, Inventor, Scientist, Magician, and Father of the U. S. Air Force, was published by Frederic C. Beil, in 2007. He has since published four other books: The Third Candidate, 2008 a novel, Grater Life, 2009 a novel in stories, Vigilia's Tempest, 2010 a novel, and Acorn's Card, 2011 a novella and stories. In addition to the thirty-three years he spent at Cornell University, Poleskie has taught, or been a visiting artist or professor at 26 colleges and art schools throughout the world, including: MIT, the School of Visual Arts in New York, Rhode Island School of Design, the University of California, Berkeley, William and Mary College, and the Institute of Fine Arts, Tegucigalpa, Honduras. A skilled pilot, Poleskie attained an Air Transport Pilot's rating, and also was active in air show and stunt flying, and was a champion competition aerobatic pilot. Stephen Poleskie currently is a professor emeritus at Cornell University. SOMETIMES OUR BEST ENDEAVORS, most carefully planned and executed, do not work out. What went wrong? Sometimes something casually conceived and virtually "knocked off" is completely successful. Right is often wrong, and wrong right. Why do we love what we are doing, and hate it at the same time? Why do we put our works in public, and suffer both pride and embarrassment?
